Ask Tykeia- Unsupportive Parents, The FAFSA & Independent Vs Dependent Student Status
Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 3:10PM A subscriber reached out for help with filing her FAFSA. She asked "How do you overcome an unsupportive parent or family member who refuses to supply you with his/her income information required to file the FAFSA?" Unfortunately this a very common situation. So I decided to address the issue here on TheGlamNERDS.com in hopes of helping others that may be dealing with this same problem.

Sadly, students who don't have access to their parent's financial information don't have many options. Students in this case would need to file their FAFSA's as an independent self sustaining citizen in order to apply for federal aid without their parent's tax information. Filing independently is easier said than done. The government lists specific conditions through which students can acquire independent student status. I share those conditions in this post. I also share a Youtube Video , I posted a while ago that discusses dependent vs. independent status in greater detail. Click the link below for the goods. Don't miss the bus children!
