Tykeia’s Tips for Filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Photo Courtesy of http://www.fafsaexpress.comAs January ends and those final W-2’s and other tax documents come trickling in, tax season 2012 is well underway. After completing this year’s 1040’s and the like, all are encouraged to complete their Free Applications for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) if they haven’t already done so.  I’ve filed more than my fair share of FAFSA Forms so I’m here with some information that will hopefully help you navigate the process.

If you have a question about something not covered here, feel free to shoot me an email at Tykeia@TheGlamNERDs.com. This list is not in any specific order. I didn't want to list this informaiton in any particular way because all of it is of equal importance. Please click the link below to find the information and please feel free to share it with others.

Happy FAFSA Filing!

Dear High School Seniors, File Your FAFSAS ASAPTUALLY!

Hey Hey.. I know it's been a while and things are looking different.  I've been making some changes and gearing up to relaunch the site and things are not quite ready but I had to break my silence for this very important announcement. * Clears throat*  File your Free Application for Federal Student Aid as soon as you can. Federal monies are distributed on a first come, first serve basis.  In putting off the FAFSA you could literally be putting your grants/scholarships and subsidized loans into someone else's pocket.  Please.. Don't miss this bus children. Although deadlines are much much later, remember that financial aid is usually given on a first come first serve basis.  Freshmen are already at the bottom of the barrel.  It is suggested that most students file their FAFSA by January 15th.

The GlamNERD's Guide to the U.S. News & World Report College Rankings!

The 2012 edition of U.S. News & World Reports Best Colleges was published online yesterday September 13th. U. S. News & World Report’s published rankings of colleges and universities is the nation’s most popular and most controversial listing of its kind.  Annually, the magazine collects and analyzes statistical data on colleges and universities throughout the country and ranks institutions based on their performance on various indicators/dimensions of academic quality.  Many academics, economists, consumers etc have challenged the credibility of the lists, questioning both the data collected and the process by which it is analyzed.  Additionally, every school varies in mission, administration, faculty, culture, financial status , etc, therefore many  have argued whether are not there are universal standards of academic quality and institutional effectiveness.

In any case, many high school teachers, counselors, students and their families use the U. S. News & World Report rankings as a resource in identifying options for college and beyond.  Many do so with a superficial understanding of the rankings and how to use them.  Through this post I will share some general information about the methodology of the U.S. News & World Report College Rankings and some insight as to how to use them properly in your college search.

Dealing with Curfews and Household Rules for the College Student Returning Home For the Summer!

Higher education not only affords one the opportunity to extend his/her knowledge and broaden his/her understanding.  It also serves as the opportunity for one to escape the home and domicile of his of her parents.  All school year, you’ve been doing you.  Coming and going as you please, making your own decisions and living by your own rules and standards.  Now it’s the summer time and your home cooked meals and free laundry come at the expense of having to hear yo’ mama’s , and/or daddy’s, mouth.   I know you think that your year or two of college life makes you a “grown @ss man/woman” but listen to teacher, your parents probably do not agree.  Once you’re back under their roof, eating their snacks and burning their gas, they generally will feel entitled to ask you "what you doin?" "where you going?" and "when you gone be back?"

I say don’t fight it. They’ll treat you like an adult when you start acting like one.  And if you start acting like one without your parent's having to holler, threaten or use physical force you’ll get to the promised land a whole lot sooner.

There are  few things you can do to keep them out of your business this summer!
