Why Internships Are A Must

It's been a while since I stepped on the soap box with a message on the grave importance of internships in the life of every student. This time I"ve been inspired by my Auntie Wendy Williams of The Wendy Williams Show. Recently, Aunt Wen took some time out of her daily "The After Show" Youtube telecast to recognize one of her interns. She admonishes all students to get good internships and take them seriously. She even shares some information on the characteristics that she looks for when selecting interns to work with her staff . Get in the video below.

In short, Aunt Wendy reminds us of the necessity of respecting our intenships by carrying ourselves in a professional & respectable manner at all times. In the video we met Brandon, an intern who had just given her a thank you note on his last day as an intern for the show. Brandon was alway on time, well dressed (word to Cooley High , lol) and most importantly he was well spoken of by everyone that he worked with on the show. Consequentially, Brandon's left a lasting impression on Aunt Wendy and her staff and she would welcome the opportunity to work with him again. And, BOOM! Just like that, Brandon may just have scored himself a job after graduation. It's that easy.

The moral of the story is remember your brand. Your work ethic and how you carry yourself speaks volumes about you and can really make or break you as you strive for your professional goals and aspirations. Every brand is known for something, good or bad. In this economy, we're all out here marketing ourselves. Do all you can to ensure that your brand in well respected, otherwise your competition continuously will snuff you out. This goes for students of all levels, it's never to early or to late to chase the career of your dreams. Identify and apply for internships and once hired, treat your internship like it's a real professional job. Why? Because that's what it is. It's an opportunity for you to get some great practical experience and skill development in the field of your choosing. Honor your commitments, be punctual, dress neatly and appropriately, be polite, kind and courteous and be present in your position. Don't let anyone catch you slouching or lounging around, tweeting, napping, texting or any of that other foolishness. Be prompt in completing assignments and make yourself available to help as much as you can. It worked for Brandon and it's bound to work for you.

Shoutout to Brandon and Aunt Wendy. The After Show is one of my favorite YouTube Subscriptions.
